Greer, Larry GeneLarry Gene Greer, 88, of Narrows, died Friday, January 10, 2025, at home with his sons by his side. He was born in Welch, WV on August 5, 1936, and was the son of the late Robert Millard and Zilla Duncan Greer.

Mr. Greer was a 1955 graduate of Welch High School and received his a BS in Education (1959) at from Concord College in Athens, WV, where he was a member of the football, basketball, and track teams. He obtained his a MS in Education (1964) from West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV. His teaching career spanned a total of 57 years: 1959-1963 Davy Junior High School, Davy, WV; 1963-1964 at Groveport-Madison High School, Columbus, OH. In 1964, his best friend and college teammate, Bob Price, asked Mr. Greer to join him at Narrows High School, Narrows, VA. He spent the remaining with 52 of those years spent teaching and coaching in the Giles County (VA) Public School system. Mr. Greer was also a beloved football, basketball, and track coach. He was inducted into the Narrows High School Hall of Fame in 2012. Mr. Greer retired in 2016 and enjoyed attending Virginia Tech football/basketball games as well as spending recreational and family time with his sons and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis (Blevins), in 1999. He is survived by his sons, Millard Greer and his wife, Cathy, of Middletown, DE, Richard Greer and his wife, Debbie, of Elliston, VA; three grandchildren, Meagan Miller of Middletown, DE, Hannah Greer of Pittsburgh, PA, and Kess Greer of Elliston, VA; and three great-grandchildren (Haizley, Sophia, and Hunter); and third son by proxy, Eric Thwaites, of Pearisburg, VA..

The family will receive friends at Givens-Riffe’s Funeral Home in Narrows on Saturday, January 18, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 1pm with burial following at Birchlawn Burial Park, Pearisburg, VA.

The family wishes to express their appreciation of for the friendship, compassion and assistance shown by neighbor friend and neighbor, Eugene Evans, during Mr. Greer’s later years.
