Graves, Sammey Ray

Sammey “Sam” Ray Graves passed away peacefully at his home, with his wife and children at his side. He proudly served in the United States Air Force after attending VPI. He took over Graves Construction Company upon the death of his brother William, both of them following in their father’s footsteps. He was an active Kiwanis Club member during the 1960’s and 70’s. Sam also served on the Advisory Board at First National Bank from 1977 to 2000. He enjoyed hunting and deep sea fishing. In addition, Sam was a Lifetime Golden Hokie. As a teenager, he developed a passion for golf while working as a caddy at nearby Blacksburg Country Club.

Sam is survived by his wonderful and devoted wife for 58 years, Maria Viola Valdez Graves, who adored and cared for him throughout and up until his calling to be with our Heavenly Father. He is also survived by three very caring children, two sons Gary Lee Graves and daughter-n-law Sharon; son Charles Ray Graves;and one daughter Cynthia Marie Graves. He is survived by his brother, Eddie Joe Graves and wife, Roswitha grandchildren: Kaylee Graves, Carmen Graves, Preston Graves, Addie Marie Graves, William Charles Graves; one great-grandson Ethan as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded death by his parents: Charles Lee Graves and Elsie Lora Moore Graves; brother William “Bo” Graves; sister Wanda Dillon and brother-n-law William “Sonny” Dillon; sister-in-law Sarah Graves; nephew Terry Graves; and all too soon, his grandson George Ray Hamlin.

The family expresses its thanks to Good Samaritan Hospice for the compassionate care provided by Brittany, Denise and Chris who went above and beyond.

There will be a private family graveside service. The family will receive friends at the Blacksburg Country Club on Thursday, April 25, 2019, from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M.
