Duncan, Jerry Norman
Jerry Norman Duncan of Shawsville, Virginia, died June 14, 2024, at age 74. He was born in Radford, Virginia, to the late Myrtle Garland Duncan (Carroll) and Arnold Austin Duncan on February 21,1950. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Jeffrey Garland Duncan.
Jerry is survived by Stanley William Guthrie, his soul mate and spouse of 48 years; brother, John B. Duncan and wife, Sharon; sister-in law, Robin Duncan; nephews, Bartley Duncan and Zach Duncan; great nephew, Grady Duncan; great niece, Madison Duncan; uncles, Don and Arthur Garland; a number of beloved cousins; and dogs, Lollie and Leala.
Jerry had a great love and talent for music. A student leader of the BHS Warrior Band, he earned First Chair Symphonic and Concert in-State two consecutive years. Jerry received a partial scholarship to Florida State University and established himself as a proud member of the FSU marching Seminole Band. He completed his degree specializing in Music Therapy.
Jerry devoted many years to serving America’s Veterans with vision impairment and those in need of hospice care, and our nations wounded warriors. He was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Christiansburg, Virginia, and was active in “Our House”, which is a homeless program affiliated with St. Thomas.
Jerry had no doubts he was coming “home” after retirement. His return was filled with holidays, cooking and enjoying the love of his family…particularly watching his nephews grow up. Nothing was more important to Jerry than family.
Jerry never met a stranger. He was friendly—a listener who made people feel good about themselves. His sense of humor was abundant and free flowing with anyone who needed a laugh. Jerry was a healer, incorporating that life value into his everyday life and was always ready to reach out.
A celebration of Jerry’s life for family and friends is Saturday, June 22, 2024, at 5 PM at McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg, Virginia.
