Drivers watch for refreezing on roads overnight

Although interstates and primary roads (1-599) in western Virginia are clear this afternoon following the recent winter storm, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) cautions drivers to be alert to refreezing conditions overnight as freezing temperatures continue. Any moisture on road surfaces will turn to ice. Expect icy spots on roads, bridges and overpasses until temperatures rise.
VDOT crews continue to plow and treat secondary (those numbered 600 and above) roads and neighborhood streets. Some isolated areas remain covered in frozen snow and ice, including some unpaved roads. Crews are using abrasives on these roads and drivers should not expect bare pavement.
VDOT workers will be monitoring conditions overnight to respond as necessary.
Check roadway conditions by using VDOT’s free 511 mobile app and 511Virginia website, which offer information about road conditions, traffic, incidents, construction and congestion as well as access to traffic cameras, weather and more. Information is also available by calling 511 while in Virginia.
