DOT Grant to Virginia Tech

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded Virginia Tech a $490,251 grant for a project that develops training of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) technologies. U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement:

“The development of ADAS technologies is meant to elevate vehicle safety standards, raise consumer awareness, and encourage a market for safer vehicles on our roads.

“This grant for $490,251 helps Virginia Tech design and distribute trainings on the use of ADAS technologies and to better educate commercial vehicle operators.”

BACKGROUND

The awarding agency of these funds is the DOT Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) will administer these funds to develop ADAS training videos, create an educational website, create immersive virtual reality ADAS training and disseminate the trainings through Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) events.

Last month, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) awarded a $213,204 grant to Virginia Tech to develop Automated Driving Systems (ADS) measurement techniques.
