Dawson, Margaret Sclater

Margaret Sclater Dawson of Blacksburg, Va. died Tuesday, April 9, 2019, at Kroontje Health Care Center, Blacksburg, Va. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Stanley and Maude Shackelford Dawson.

Aunt Margaret was also preceded in death by her brother, Binford Dawson; sisters, Agnes D. Joyner, Marian Hampton, Harriet Dawson; great- nephew, Donald Joyner, Jr.; and two brothers-in-law. She was survived by nephew, Donald W. Joyner (Barbara), Chesterfield, Va.; niece, Anne J. Vaughan, Greensboro, N.C.; great-niece, Steffanie Vaughan (Allen Sutphin), Greensboro, N.C.; niece, Melanie Buchholtz (Brian), Jackson, Tenn.; great-nephew, Patrick Joyner (Rhonda), Cleburne, Texas; five great-great-nieces and five great-great-nephews.

Margaret retired in 1985 from Virginia Tech Administration Accounting Dept. after 43 years of service. She was a member of Virginia Tech Retirees Assoc.; volunteered for 15 years at the Blacksburg donor blood center; member of the local AARP; member of Blacksburg Presbyterian Church for over 60 years, member of Women of Church, Church Women United, and was treasurer in each. A big fan of Virginia Tech football and basketball, Margaret attended home games faithfully. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling extensively.

The land for Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and cemetery was given by her paternal grandparents, the Childress family, from their plantation. The first church was log-built in 1828. Upon completion, the church was given to the Methodist Conference. The log church was replaced in 1881 and marked its 175th anniversary in 2003. Veterans from the American Revolution, the Civil War, including her grandfathers, parents, and cousins are buried in the cemetery.

A service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 13, 2019 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Esmont, Va. A memorial service will be held at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, Blacksburg, Va., at a later date.
