Conner, Gary ScottGary Scott Conner, age 79, passed away peacefully at home on September 27, 2024, after a lengthy battle with Parkinsons. Gary was born July 6, 1945, in Liberia, Africa to Pauline Cornett Conner and P. C. Conner who were on assignment for the Firestone Rubber Company.

His family then relocated to Mexico where they were on a similar assignment before returning to their beloved Elk Creek in Grayson County Virginia. Upon graduation from Independence High School in 1963, Gary began his 44-year career as a surveyor for the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Gary had a quick-wit, deep love of music and never spoke an unkind word about anyone. He enjoyed all types of activities including hunting, fishing, golfing, sporting activities, VT Football and travelling with a close group of friends. He is truly one of those souls that was loved by everyone who knew him.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, his mother-in-law Bonnie W. Kegley Flinchum, and his sister-in-law Barbara Lynn Kegley Sutphin. He is survived by many loved ones that will continue to honor his humble and compassionate spirit, including his wife of 54 years Nancy Kegley Conner; sister-in-law Renee Gleaves (Eric), brother-in-law Dell Sutphin (Becky), niece Gina Sutphin Dunnavant (Jerry), nephews Trey Sutphin(Sarah) and Wesley Lange, great-nephew Brit Dunnavant(Lauren), great-niece Kellen Renner-Thomas(Christian), Eugene and Linda Kast, Linda Hall, Todd and Angie Kast, Katelyn and Mack Muldoon, Eddie, Barbara, Greg, and Trandon Sutherland, and will be missed by many other friends and cousins.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 3 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held at Lebanon Methodist Church, Elk Creek, Virginia on Friday October 4 at 1 p.m. with visitation for an hour preceding the service and Rev. Brent Strout officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
