Christiansburg Parks & Rec joins Babe Ruth league

The Town of Christiansburg’s Parks and Recreation Department is excited to announce it will be joining other local recreation departments in a new youth softball organization affiliated with the Babe Ruth Softball League.

Blacksburg Softball Association, Montgomery County Parks and Recreation, Radford Parks and Recreation, Pulaski County Parks and Recreation, Pembroke Recreation, Pearisburg Recreation and Narrows Recreation will also be participating in the new league.

The Babe Ruth Softball League will offer 10-and-under and 12-and-under teams, and there are plans to offer teams for older age groups in the future, depending on interest. The age deadline date for players is January 1, 2018.

Christiansburg Parks and Recreation, Blacksburg Baseball Association, Montgomery County Parks and Recreation, Narrows Recreation, Pearisburg Recreation, Pembroke Recreation, Pulaski County Parks and Recreation and Radford Parks and Recreation will also be joining Babe Ruth Baseball League for players ages 13-15. The age deadline date for Babe Ruth Baseball players is May 1, 2018.

Christiansburg previously participated in Dixie Softball, and will continue to participate in Dixie Youth Baseball for younger age divisions. The main difference between a Dixie Softball league and a Babe Ruth Softball league is that Babe Ruth Softball League allows all local teams to compete in the state tournament.

Babe Ruth Softball has become one of the premier softball programs in North America since its inception in 1984. It emphasizes education, skill development, participation and fun. Babe Ruth Baseball was founded in 1951 to create an opportunity for players to use standard 90’ diamonds under official rules used by Major League Baseball.

“We’re excited to be joining the Babe Ruth organization because of the opportunity it presents for our area youth, especially since so many of our surrounding jurisdictions will also be making the switch,” said Brad Epperley, director of Parks and Recreation for the Town of Christiansburg. “We appreciate the regional approach this partnership allows us to take, and we look forward to softball and baseball season this year.”
