Carney, Pamela Mathis
Pamela M. Carney, of Floyd County, Virginia passed away on Thursday, September 18, 2025. Born in 1941, Pamela (Pam) was the daughter of the late Captain Harold and Helen Mathis, Tuckerton, New Jersey.
Pamela’s grand adventure with her husband of 48 years, Armand, ended with his death on March 17, 2008. During their marriage she traveled frequently with Armand for his work as a Captain with the Pacemaker Yacht Company. Similarly, she grew up traveling with her father, Captain Harold Mathis. For many years while Armand was honing his talents as a waterfowl artist, Pam taught in schools local to Tuckerton, New Jersey. She served her Tuckerton community, dedicating her time to designing parade floats, volunteering, and serving on the Tuckerton Library Board and other organizations.
Pam and Armand spent their later years renovating a farmhouse in Floyd, Virginia. She was well known for her customer service at the Riner Food Center, Riner, Virginia where she worked for over 30 years. She adored her customers and greeted everyone by name. Pamela found joy in life’s simple pleasures – feeding peppermints to her pet cow Molly Moo, raising her loyal Briard dogs, gardening, reading, and doing crosswords at her farm.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Gale and Michael Bonanno of Owings, Maryland, their children Ian and Emma Bonanno, and Shannon and Mark David of Durham, North Carolina.
Services will be private.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the caring and dedicated team of Good Samaritan Hospice and Palliative Care. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in memory of Pam Carney to Good Samaritan, 4751 Cove Rd NW, Roanoke, VA 24017, www.goodsam.care or Floyd County Humane Society, 2136 Franklin Pike SE, Floyd, VA 24091, www.floydhumanesociety.org.
