Carissa Nichols Graduates from APTA Program
On May 8, 2018, Blacksburg Transit Operations Supervisor Carissa Nichols graduated from the American Public Transportation Association’s Emerging Leaders Program, a prestigious 12-month long professional development program dedicated to furthering the careers of those with less than five years of experience in the transit industry. Nichols presented at the APTA Bus and Paratransit Conference as the capstone of her participation in the program. Nichols was one of only 28 selected and is the first to be selected from Blacksburg Transit.
Her presentation, The Aging Transit Workforce: Investing in Human Capital, examined proactive strategies for operator recruitment and retention in the face of upcoming retirement of a large number of transit employees.
“While the past year was challenging, I learned so much about myself and the industry. I look forward to seeing how the transit industry is going to change over the next few years and to see how BT is going to help lead the way,” said Nichols.
