Can Do! Food Drive Nets 900+ Items
The Blacksburg Fork and Cork annual Can Do! food drive benefiting Micah’s Backpack brought in over 900 food items for underprivileged children. Food was collected on the day of the festival and the weeks leading up to the event through food drives, “Pack the Backpack” shelf sponsors, and a raffle, with items donated by Backcountry and Bold Rock Hard Cider.
Kroger, the 2018 “Fork” Title Sponsor, supported two food drives at their South Main location to raise awareness and support for the cause. Additionally, festival attendees were asked to bring specific items that children could easily prepare and enjoy. If three or more of those listed items were donated, then the attendee received a two dollar off coupon towards the purchase of a bottle of wine.
Micah’s Backpack addresses children’s hunger issues by partnering with local schools to provide direct assistance to students and families who qualify for the free lunch program. Each week during the school year, the students receive a backpack filled with enough food for the weekend.
Overall, festival donations, shelf sponsors, raffle purchases and the food drives yielded $2,995 and 950 food items for Micah’s Backpack. The donations will go a long way in helping feed children in this community.
