Buckland, Sherman Matthew

Sherman “Sonny” Matthew Buckland died on Sunday, September 1, 2024, at the age of 86, after battling cancer for over 27 years. Born July 1, 1938, in Lamar, WV, he was the son of the late Sherman B. “Pete” and Mary Morrison Buckland.

Sonny was a devoted and loving husband and father. He never let his cancer diagnosis slow him down. He maintained a positive attitude throughout his illness and was an inspiration to his family and friends.

He was employed by Celanese for 41 years while also working alongside his brother, J.B., on the family farm. He was a faithful member of the Rich Creek Baptist Church and served as Deacon for many years.

In addition to his parents, Sonny was preceded in death by his son, Kevin Matthew Buckland; brothers, J.B. Buckland and David Buckland; sister, Shirley Buckland Cook; and infant sister, Betty.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Linda McCormick Buckland; sister, Scarlet Buckland Ratcliffe; sister-in-law, Barbara Caldwell Buckland; brother-in-law, Paul McCormick (Jean); many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and many special friends who loved him dearly and he loved them.

In keeping with Sonny’s wishes, he will be cremated with no services. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Sonny’s church, Rich Creek Baptist Church (P.O. Box 307, Rich Creek, VA 24147), or to a charity of your choice.
