Bike4Alz Coast-to-Coast Bicycle Ride for Alzheimer’s

Bike4Alz Coast-to-Coast Bicycle Ride for Alzheimer’s 4Since 2010, members of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity (nicknamed “FIJI”) at Western Kentucky University (Bowling Green, KY) have organized and executed coast-to-coast bicycle rides every other summer in order to benefit Alzheimer’s Disease research.

The first seven rides have averaged between $60K-$70K each raised for charity. The 2021 ride is now underway, having started from San Francisco on May 22nd, and will end in Virginia Beach on July 28th. Their 2021 goal is to top $100K funds raised for the Alzheimer’s Association.

The group has adopted the name Bike4Alz Inc., and has been granted 501(c)(3) charitable organization status by the IRS (EIN 47-5649817). All proceeds from the 2021 ride will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association, either via local chapters or to the national organization. Each Rider/Driver had to raise approximately $1500 to cover personal and shared group expenses during the 2020-2021 school year in order to participate, not including a suitable bicycle which can cost up to $1000.

The 2021 Bike4Alz group of 12 riders and 2 drivers will be arriving in Blacksburg, VA on Thursday 22 July, and will spend the next week afterwards making their way east through Lexington, Charlottesville, Richmond, Williamsburg, and finally ending their 10-week journey at the Virginia Beach boardwalk (“front wheels wet” in the Atlantic, after starting with “back wheels wet” in the Pacific). The Bike4Alz riders and drivers are hoping for a repeat of the great experiences and big dollars raised from their previous trips through Virginia!

Thu 22 July 2:00-3:00pm (approx): Bike4Alz Riders and Support Vehicles arrive at the Virginia Tech Drillfield, Memorial Chapel/Pylons. Local members of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity will be on hand to welcome the WKU FIJIs to Blacksburg. Bicyclists will be coming down North Main Street from Newport VA to the Alumni Mall.
