Bank employee charged with embezzlement
A former employee at a BB&T bank branch in Pearisburg faces several embezzlement charges in the theft of thousands of dollars from the accounts of two relatives.
Court documents list 48-year-old Anna Burton Holt as the defendant. She was reportedly an employee of the bank.
Senior Special Agent Gregory Allen Watson stated in his Criminal Complaint that investigators believe Holt transferred funds between October 31, 2016 and December 31, 2016.
In Watson’s statement of probable cause, he says that one relative of Holt’s came to the BB&T back indicating that she had not received a statement in over a year. Another relative also indicated that she was not receiving statements, Watson wrote.
In court documents investigators say Holt admitted to transferring $16,850 from a relative’s account and making cash withdrawals in the amount of $6,373.58 from an account of another relative. Both relatives were apparently unaware of the transactions that were made.
In addition, Watson believes that a total of $300,000 additional funds were stolen from BB&T between February 2014 through April, 10 2017, but Holt denied taking any other money in an interview.
David White, Vice President, Corporate Communications for BB&T told WDBJ7, “This was a very unfortunate situation for all those involved. BB&T completely cooperated with the authorities in their investigation, because the case is still open.”
