Akers, John Beamer
John Beamer Akers, age 87, of Riner, Virginia died October 5, 2024, at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center with his family by his side. He was born in Montgomery County, Virginia on February 26, 1937, to the late Freeman and Lucy Early Akers.
He was an Army Veteran serving in Stuggart, Germany, member of Bain Chapel P.H. Church, and retired after 33 years from Lynchburg Foundry in Radford as a gate guard.
He is preceded in death by sisters, Beulah Nester, Reba Meredith, Betty Lou Linkous; brothers, Curtis Akers, Alvin Akers, Balford “Rowdy” Akers, George Akers, Melvin James Akers, and Franklin Lee Akers.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ellewese Duncan Akers; son and daughter-in-law Harlan and Priscillia Akers; daughter and son-in-law, Anita and John “Joey” Sutton; granddaughters, Courtney Whitaker and Kurt Giantonio, Heather and Philip Gardner, Chelsey and John Otey; great-grandchildren, Kira Crockett, Asher Price, Piper Whitaker, Leora and Sawyer Gardner, Caiden and Carson Otey; sister and brother-in-law, Beva and Henderson Woods; brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Charlotte Akers; sisters-in-law, Edith Akers Conley, Nelva Akers, Joyce Akers; brother-in-law, Elvin Duncan; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend, David Duncan
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at 11:00 am in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Pastors Bruce Hagee, Kevin Poston, and Jason Meredith officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 pm Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Dr. SW, Blacksburg, VA 24060.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Riner Rescue Squad.
