10/25: New Exhibit: Answering the Call

10/25: New Exhibit: Answering the Call 2Glencoe Mansion, Museum, and Gallery will host an exhibition highlighting a newly curated collection of rare, military photographs from the early 20th century. The exhibition “Answering the Call” is composed of images from the collection of Radford’s Harvey-Howe-Carper Post 30 of the American Legion.

The images span from 1909 through the late 1940s, with the vast majority of the images showing life for Radford’s Company M of the National Guard during the years right before the country’s entry into World War I. These images show life for these men from military drills and training to everyday activities like kitchen duty and even just candid moments.

These images offer a direct, unfiltered look into a defining chapter of Radford’s history.

“Preserving and sharing these physical artifacts from the American Legion helps bridge more than a century of time,” says Gallery Coordinator Jean Rempfer. “They allow today’s audiences to reflect on the human experience of being called to serve their country,” she adds.

Contained within the images are many unidentified faces. The Glencoe Mansion and the American Legion invite the community to come experience the images and, if possible, help to identify more of the men in the photographs. The exhibition of over thirty photographs will be available for viewing at Glencoe Mansion from October 14 through November 1. There will be a free public reception on Sunday, October 25, from 1 to 2:30 PM.

Glencoe Mansion’s hours of operation are Wednesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM and Sunday from 1 to 4 PM. There is no admission charge.
