MacAdoo, Berkeley Gilmer
Mary Berkeley Cosby Gilmer MacAdoo, a longtime Pulaski, VA resident, hospital volunteer, and elementary school teacher, died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 93. She was predeceased by her husband Robert W. MacAdoo, her parents Mary B. and Howard C. Gilmer, Jr. and youngest sister Betsy Gilmer Brown.
She is survived by her middle sister Sally Lou Gilmer Hundley of Richmond, VA, daughter Jane B. MacAdoo and her husband Kenneth Cline of Pulaski, VA, daughter Sally W. MacAdoo and husband Winslow Mankin of Smithville, TX, and several beloved nephews, nieces and their children.
During Berkeley’s homemaking years, she led a Girl Scout Troop, taught several people to swim (she was a Red Cross certified lifeguard and instructor), and was a very active member of Christ Episcopal Church, Pulaski. As her children approached their teenage years, she went back to college and became an elementary school teacher at Claremont and Critzer in Pulaski. Berkeley was a very sharp and avid bridge player, an excellent water skier in her youth, and was known for spending a considerable amount of time with a book in her hands when she wasn’t knitting or telling humorous stories to family and friends.
In her later years, she volunteered at the front desk and cancer center at Lewis Gale Hospital Pulaski. Later on, she joined the Warm Hearth community in Blacksburg, VA, still enjoying bridge, swimming and books well into her 80’s.
Special thanks to our friend Ruth Low, many neighbors and friends, and all those who provided much needed support in her later years. Many thanks to the staff of Showalter and Kroontje Healthcare Centers for their compassionate care.
At this time, no services are yet planned. Any memorial gifts may be given to Christ Episcopal Church at 144 North Washington Avenue Pulaski, VA 23401. The Warm Hearth Foundation @retire.org., or the agency on aging at 44 Third Street, N.W. Pulaski, Virginia 24301.
