Weather Update 6:30 pm 2Light snow accumulations taper off tonight.

Snow showers will continue to bring light snow accumulations of up to a half inch to an inch or so to the western mountains of North Carolina and Virginia, as well as the Greenbrier Valley in West Virginia this evening. Areas that are directly on the upslope side of the mountains may see slightly higher values than the 1 inch mentioned above.

Be prepared for slick spots on untreated roads, particularly on bridges and overpasses. Please allow extra time to reach your destination.

EXTREME COLD WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO NOON EST
TUESDAY…

* WHAT…Dangerously cold wind chills as low as 16 below expected.

* WHERE…Portions of northwest North Carolina, southwest Virginia, and southeast West Virginia.

* WHEN…From 6 PM this evening to noon EST Tuesday.

* IMPACTS…The cold wind chills as low as 15 below zero could result in hypothermia or frostbite if precautions are not taken.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…In addition to the cold, continue to use extra caution if traveling. The persistent cold has not allowed for ice to melt off of untreated roads.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

If you must go outside, dress in layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves, and slow down if driving.
