YMCA Fast-Tracks Corner Market

YMCA Fast-Tracks Corner Market 2The YMCA at Virginia Tech, a trusted community partner for over 150 years, has accelerated its Corner Market initiative to respond to an urgent food insecurity crisis caused by recent disruptions in SNAP benefits.

Originally scheduled for launch in Spring 2026, the Corner Market opened its doors on November 3, 2025, and is already serving families in need. This program offers food FREE to anyone presenting an EBT card, ensuring that no one in our community goes hungry during this critical time.

CEO Statement:
“Our mission has always been to respond to the community’s most pressing needs,” said Ryan Martin, CEO of the YMCA at Virginia Tech. “When we saw the impact of the SNAP disruption, we knew we couldn’t wait until spring. The Corner Market is about more than food—it’s about dignity, hope, and ensuring families have what they need to thrive.”

Location & Hours:

  • Y Center, 1000 N Main St., Blacksburg
  • Mon, Wed, Fri: 5–7 PM
  • Sat: 11 AM–3 PM

Why This Matters:
Food insecurity is rising in the New River Valley. Over the past three weeks, participation in YMCA food programs has surged, and calls from concerned neighbors have multiplied. The Corner Market is a rapid response to this growing need, complementing the Virginia Emergency Nutrition Assistance (VENA) initiative while highlighting the importance of sustainable, local solutions.

Your Support Makes a Difference:
We need your help to keep shelves stocked! Thanks to our strong network of partners, we can purchase food at just 19¢ per pound—meaning a $10 gift provides more than 50 pounds of groceries for local families.

How to Help:
The YMCA is calling on community members to make early year-end donations and consider increasing their contributions. A fundraising goal of $30,000 has been set:

  • $15,000 for the Community Food Fund to purchase food for the Corner Market and other food access programs.
  • $15,000 to sustain outreach programs serving youth, families, and newcomers across the New River Valley.

How to donate:

Every gift matters, and cash contributions help us act fast and efficiently. Together, we can provide nourishment, dignity, and hope—and build a stronger, more resilient community for all.
