August photo club winners
Joyce Sims and Linda Waggaman, both of Radford, tied to win the Radford Photo Club rain challenge for August. Sim’s photo shows a young bluebird enjoying the rain in a mud puddle. Waggaman’s photo was taken during a short weekend vacation with the family in Townsend, Tenn., as they watched from their deck the storm coming over the mountains.
Michele Borgarelli of Blacksburg won the open contest with a photo titled “The Old Stone Bridge.” The bridge of the hamlet of Forno was built in 1477 along the mule track to Viù close to Torino, Italy. “It is characterized by two unequal arches: the wider one constitutes the actual bridge, the other serves as a connection with the bank,” he says. “The aedicule, dedicated to the Madonna, was originally frescoed. During WWII it was used to place a machine gun, and a window was opened. It was closed again after the war, but the painting was gone.”
The Radford Photo Club’s next meeting will be at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19, at the Radford Public Library. Toni Pitts, a professional photographer from Blacksburg, will speak on the exposure triangle and the use of the histogram.
The Radford Photo Club is made up of professional and amateur photographers from throughout the New River Valley. Meetings, events, and outings are open to the public.
