Guthrie, Barry Lynn
Barry Lynn Guthrie departed this life August 16, 2024 in his home in Ripplemead, Virginia. Born in Ripplemead, Virginia on January 14, 1946, he was the son of the late William and Mary Hetherington Guthrie.
Mr. Guthrie was a member of the Giles High School Class of 1964 in Pearisburg, Virginia. He received his BS degree in Biology from Virginia Polytechnic and State University in 1968. He taught school for 31 years in Virginia in the counties of Hanover, Prince William, Louisa, and Bland, and for another 12 years at New River Community College.
Barry enjoyed construction work, woodworking projects, photography, and reading and writing both prose and poetry. His heroes were his parents, his wife, children, and grandchildren who he loved dearly, many of the students that he came to know during his 43 years of teaching, and his beloved St Bernards, Mandy and Prissy. He was a member of the Church of the Brethren in Brightwood, Virginia, but recently attended the Blue Ridge Church in Christiansburg as well.
He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Jean Ohana Guthrie; parents, William Arthur Guthrie and Mary Elizabeth Hetherington Guthrie; a brother, Donald Guthrie; sister, Ruth Blevins and her husband, “Bill” Blevins; brother-in-law, Allen Newberry, and sister-in-law, Margaret MacKenzie.
Left to cherish his memory to their hearts are his sons, Matthew Christopher Guthrie of New Braintree, Massachusetts, and Ogden Beauregard Guthrie(Susan Ann) of Staunton, Virginia; daughters, Heidi Guthrie of Canton, Georgia, and Virginia Futrell (Bobby) of Gray, Georgia; grandchildren, Denny Guthrie of Staunton, Virginia, Mikala and Savannah Guthrie of New Braintree Massachusetts, Tommy, Sam, and Charlie Futrell of Gray, Georgia, and Frankie and Henry Diaz of Canton, Georgia; a brother, Alan Guthrie (Thez) of Ripplemead, Virginia; and sisters, Elizabeth Newberry and Norma Newberry of Bland, Virginia.
The family will receive friends at a time of visitation on Sunday, August 18, 2024 from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM at Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke, Virginia. A funeral service to celebrate a life well lived will be conducted on Sunday, August 18, 2024 at 3:00 PM in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Scott Obenchain officiating. Following the service he will be cremated at his request. His remains will be scattered along with his wife’s by the family at a later date.
