McNeil, Wendell Clarence

McNeil, Wendell Clarence 4Wendell Clarence McNeil was called home to his heavenly Father on Monday, January 1, 2024, at the age of 85. He was born in the Terry’s Fork area of Floyd County, VA on November 24, 1938. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Maye McNeil of Check, and sister Donna McNeil Flinchum of Pilot.

Wendell spent the entirety of his life in Floyd County. He graduated from Check High School in 1957. He worked as a furniture upholsterer at Rowe Furniture for 52 years. Wendell was never much for being idle. He preferred being outdoors, whether it was tending to his small herd of cattle, mowing up and down his land, working in the garden, or tinkering with a multitude of projects in his building. Wendell also enjoyed attending car races, as he always enjoyed fast cars, particularly Chevrolets.

Above all else, Wendell was a God-fearing man who was dedicated to his church, Piedmont Pentecostal Holiness Church in Shawsville where he attended his entire life along with Piedmont Camp Meeting each summer. He prayed daily for his family, friends and our country. In recent years, he also attended Huffville Church in Pilot. Wendell loved and cared deeply for his family, and was happy as long as he was with them.

Wendell is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Mary Christine McNeil, whom he married on September 11, 1964. Christine was the love of his life who made him biscuits, gravy, and cornbread whenever he wanted them; daughter Tammy McNeil Sapp (Greg), brother Winston McNeil (Roxanne), and granddaughters Lauren Sapp and Kelsey Sapp Miller (Stetson). He is also survived by his close friend Mark Shank, as well as many other loved ones and extended family members.

A service for friends and family will be held on Friday, January 5, 2024 at 2pm at Gardner Funeral Home in Floyd with Pastors Leon Alley, Tim Clyburn, and Darren Landon officiating. Visitation will be from noon to 2pm prior to the service. Interment will follow at Wilson Cemetery in Check, VA.
