8/4-5: The Great Road Encampment

The 8th Annual Great Road Encampment will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2018 and Sunday, August 5, 2018 at Eastern Montgomery Park.

The Great Road was the main thoroughfare going west to the Frontier. It was traveled by the likes of George Washington, Daniel Boone, Andrew Lewis, William Preston, Adam Harman, the Ingles and Draper families. This event honors all who passed through the Valleys of Southwest Virginia in the quest for a better life.

Activities include:
• Demonstrations by 18th Century Reenactors
• The West Virginia Company of Roger’s Rangers
• Detached Military Hospital and Medicine of the Time
• History of Glassblowing

Demonstrations include:
• Flintlock Muskets
• Camp Cooking
• Knife and Tomahawk Throwing
• Leather Work
• Blacksmithing
• 18th Century Clothing
• Spinning
• Weaving
and more!

In addition, David Serxner of Wooden Ram Cookery is offering a Cooking Workshop for children ages 6-15 on Saturday starting at 9:00 am and is limited to 10 children. All the recipes covered in the workshop are authentic 18th century recipes. The cost of the workshop is $10.00 per child (cash only).

The event is rain or shine.

Admission is free. Donations are welcome.

The event is sponsored by the Montgomery County Parks & Recreation, Fort Vause Outfitters, Great Road Craft Guild, Seams Colonial, Rowe Furniture and other private donors.

Eastern Montgomery Park is located at 5001 Enterprise Drive in Elliston, VA beside the Elliston Fire Department.
