11/19: Banjo Day at Floyd Country Store
Join us on Saturday, November 19th, 2022 for our first-ever Celebration of Banjo Day! This is a day-long celebration of the music and history of the Banjo.
From 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM we are hosting three banjo music sets from excellent local musicians:
12:00 – 1:00 PM – Mac Traynham
1:00 – 2:00 PM – Corbin Hayslett
2:00 – 3:00 PM – Dena Jennings
At 3:00 PM, author Kristina R. Gaddy is leading a presentation and discussion on her book, Well of Souls: Uncovering the Banjo’s Hidden History. Learn about the earliest history of the banjo through music, images, and a reading, with a special focus on the history of the banjo in Virginia. Books will be available for purchase and signing.
At 7:00 PM, old-time musician, celebrated dance caller, and Appalachian music and dance scholar Phil Jamison is leading a square dance. Phil Jamison has called dances, performed, and taught at music festivals and dance events throughout the U.S. and overseas since the early 1970s, including over forty years as a member of the Green Grass Cloggers. In 2017, he was inducted into the Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame.
The afternoon music performances and book presentation are free admission, tips appreciated. Tickets to the square dance are $12.
