10/13: Venga! Indoor Climbing Competition
The annual Venga! indoor climbing competition, will be held at Crimper’s Climbing Gym, 100 Central Ave., Christiansburg, Saturday, Oct. 13.
All levels of competition—recreational to expert—will be held at this USA Climbing Collegiate and USA Climbing Bouldering sanctioned event, said John H. Johnson, Crimper’s CEO. USA Climbing is the national governing body for competitive climbing in the United States. Climbers need not be members of USA Climbing to compete at the Crimper’s Venga!, but competitors who are members of USA Climbing can earn points for the international events.
Youth climbers, 8 years to 18 years of age, will compete from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and adults will compete from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.
It is a Redpoint style competition, Johnson said. Climbers may work on the bouldering routes as many times as they wish in order to “send” the routes. Each bouldering problem has a point value and the top three scores will be counted for the final scores.
Crimper’s Climbing Gym is the place to learn, practice, train, and perform the sport of indoor climbing. Indoor climbing builds physical strength and agility, while increasing mental fortitude and focus. Climbing, which has been growing in popularity, will be included in the Olympic games in 2020.
Crimper’s has several types of climbing styles: a 16 ft. tall bouldering area equipped with 16 in. padded flooring; a 23 ft. top-rope section with 7 top-rope stations and 3 auto-belays stations; and a 30 ft. lead climbing section.
