Downtown Blacksburg, Inc. presents the 6th annual Summer Solstice Fest and Carnival which will include two days of summer fun in downtown Blacksburg. Friday June 21, Funtime Amusements will provide a carnival with games and rides for kids of all ages from 5-10pm in the parking lot of the First Church of God, Lee Street.

It’s just a few blocks on Main Street to a little slice of heaven, in the shape of a beauty salon and spa: the Norwood Salon, Main Street Radford’s business of the month for June. Since 1974, owner Tokie Kinser and staff at the Norwood Salon have been serving the Radford community. Now, 39 years later, the growth of the business has been remarkable.

The Old Pros Big Band Orchestra will celebrate its 40th anniversary at a special performance at New River Community College on Saturday, June 22. From 8 to 10 p.m. dancers (and listeners) will have the opportunity to enjoy the sounds of the Big Band Era in Edwards Hall, room 117, at New River Community College in Dublin.

The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a design public hearing on a proposed project to improve Route 8 (Riner Road) at the intersection of Route 669 (Union Valley Road and Fairview Church Road) in Montgomery County. The project will begin 0.237 mile south of Route 669 and end 0.191 mile north of Route 669.

The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a citizen information meeting on a proposed project to replace the Interstate 81 bridges over the New River and the Route 232 bridge over I-81 on the Montgomery and Pulaski County line.The meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 25, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the City of Radford Municipal Building Council Chambers, 10 Robertson Street, in Radford.

Chalmer Thomas Blevins, 84, of Dublin, passed away Friday, June 22, 2012 in the Pulaski Health Care Center. Born April 11, 1928 in Kentucky, he was the son of the late David Blevins and Belvia Sheets Blevins. His loving and beloved wife of 51 years, Catherine Smith Blevins and numerous brothers and sisters, also preceded him in death. He was a veteran of the United States Navy & Air Force. He served with the Naval Occupational Forces after World War II in the European Theatre and on patrol when Israel became a nation in 1948.While in the Air Force, he served during the Korean War. He received the Korean Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Navy Occupational Medal, and European Clasp. He was a retired mechanic for the former Kenrose Mfg. Co. & then Russell Apparel Company. He will always be remembered as Wal-mart greeter in Pulaski. Mr. Blevins was a member of the Dora Highway Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years. He loved his special church family and enjoyed singing, lay speaking, and other numerous church activities. He loved his family and was devoted to them and also loved his special friends and neighbors. He was a wonderful husband, father, and gentleman and was a fine example of what our Heavenly Father would want us to be. We want to "Thank" all the doctors, nurses and staff who took care of him during his illness. Surviving are his loving and devoted daughter to both parents, Diane Blevins, Dublin; sister, Thelma Stamper, Chilhowie. Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Monday, June 25, 2012, in the Bower Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Harry Gunter and Rev. Johnny Howlett officiating. Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin, with the Pulaski VFW Post # 1184 conducting military honors. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Bower Funeral Home, Pulaski. To send online condolences to the family, visit www.bowerfuneralhome.com.
