October 2, 1908-July 1, 2012 Florence Price Kinnear, of Prices Fork, was born in a Civil War era home there. She lived most of her life in a First World War era home right across the road. She graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman's College and did postgraduate work at the University of Virginia and Columbia University. Mrs. Kinnear's career in Montgomery County education began in a one-room school near Riner as the nation entered the Great Depression. She taught all subjects to pupils from first through seventh grade. Later she taught English and Latin in Blacksburg High School into the 1950s. She delighted in using and teaching the English language. Throughout her life she spoke and wrote with inspiring precision and authority. Florence Kinnear was a member of the DAR, the Frigate Book Club and the Virginia Tech Faculty Wives. A past president of the Blacksburg Chapter of the American Association of University Women, she also served as president of the Arboretum Garden Club and was a nationally accredited flower show judge. Much of Mrs. Kinnear's energy was devoted to lifelong membership in the Prices Fork United Methodist Church. For decades, she was organist and choir director. She still provided piano accompaniment in the church into her 101st year. She served many terms as treasurer and Sunday School Teacher. Her husband, Virginia Tech Professor Emeritus D. Lyle Kinnear, died June 6, 2001. She is survived by two nieces, Julia Ivey, of Lynchburg and Katie Sargent, of Annandale; and three nephews, John and Tom Sargent, of Peekskill, New York, and Tony Sargent, of Annandale. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Prices Fork United Methodist Church, 4236 Prices Fork Road, Blacksburg. Interment will follow at the James Bane Price Cemetery in Prices Fork. There will be no public visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Mrs. George Sullivan, Treasurer, Prices Fork United Methodist Church, 3365 McCoy Road, Blacksburg, Va. 24060. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.
