According to the National Weather service the New River area has experienced 2 to three inches of rain in the past 24 to 36 hours. Minor flooding has been reported in the New River Basin area. Local creeks and rivers could reach flood stage by tonight and crest by early Sunday according to the National Weather Service. State Police are warning people to use extra caution when driving. Drivers need to be aware that a fallen tree or power lines could be around the curve.
“Crossing flooded roads can spell disaster,” Sgt. Conroy said. According to the National Weather Service only two feet of water can carry your car away and nearly half of all flash flood fatalities are auto related. Drivers can’t see the road to tell if it has been washed away under the vehicle.
“We are urging people not to take a chance and play it safe,” Conroy said. If you live in a flood area make sure to listen for local warnings from the National Weather Service. The State Police will have extra Troopers out and on stand-by as the storm continues to impact Southwest Virginia. State Police Medflight helicopter and Troopers who are trained in swift water rescue will be on alert and available for calls.
