Adrianna Sgarlata, Miss Virginia, visited Auburn Middle School on Tuesday, March 27th. She spoke to students about anti-bullying efforts and ways to help.
She explained that the four points of her Miss Virginia tiarra stood for more than just being recognized as Miss Virginia, that they represent service, succcess, scholarship, and style Ms. Sgarlata related that as a young student, she had been bullyed when she went to a new school. She reminded students that bullying can take many forms, including psychological, physical, verbal, and peer pressure. Ms. Sgarlata said that students should take notice and help others fight bullying, by such things as speaking with an adult about the situation, and simply being inclusive with others. She told about anexperience with peer-pressure, when she was challenged to use cigarettes. She explained that the best thing to do was to distance one's self from those influences. Before leaving, she surprised the delighted audience with a brief opera rendition. Related Articles
